How To Choose Correct URL And Be Successful In SEO?

What is URL? URL refers to Uniform Resource locator more commonly understood as address of the webpage. Having a great URL structure is a no brainer yet one of the most overlooked topics. There are many factors to consider while choosing a SEO friendly URL. URL is the basic building block and success of any website depends on it. It is very important to choose the URL of your blog carefully as most of your SEO efforts will revolve around it. A suitable URL for the blog includes words that convey central theme of the blog to its readers.

Let us see how to build a URL structure that is SEO Friendly:

1. Keywords

Include targeted keywords in your main blog URL. Also, if you are targeting certain keywords in your blog post, try to include those keywords in your blog post URL to help boost its rankings. Having main keywords in your blog post URL helps boost SEO but it should not come across as unnatural. The main keywords used in your blog post URL have to convey the message in your blog post. Keywords stuffing can have negative impact on your SEO efforts.

2. Readable by humans

URLs that rank higher in search engines results are the ones that human beings easily read and understand. Try to give as much information to the reader as possible from the search engine results in order to convince him to visit your blog. The URLs that are vague in description are unlikely to get the clicks even if they rank higher in search results.

3. Shorter is better

Shorter URLs are easy to remember as compared to long URLs. For example, it is easy to remember as compared to although the latter has more number of keywords in its URL. Longer or short URLs do not affect the SEO directly but they have an impact on user experience. Social media sites like Twitter have limited number of characters per Tweet, hence having a short URL works well.

4. URLs include post titles

All SEO experts will agree to this point. As you include the title of the blog post in your URL, it resonates the search engine results. A user reads the blog title two times in this manner – first time in the URL and second time in the actual post title. This method is necessary in order to keep the reader interested in your blog post. A misinformation in the blog title may lead to rejection of the blog post thereby increasing the bounce rate of the web page.

5. Exclude stop words to make the URL shorter

Every blog post title will have some stop words. It is not necessary to have the stop words included in URL of the blog post. A URL should be short and precise in order to be successful. Avoiding stop words will increase user experience and ultimately lead to more traffic to your blog.

6. Choose preferred domain

You can choose your preferred domain either or Google interprets these two URLs as two separate webpages and hence content duplicity problem can occur. Your link building efforts can get a boost if you set your preferred domain. Sites linking to your non-preferred domain will automatically redirect towards the preferred one instead of treating them as two separate domains.

All the techniques mentioned above may look intuitive but it is hard to implement them in every blog post. However, if you can utilize them as much as you can, it will help you boost your SEO efforts. How do you decide your blog post URL? How is your experience with blog URL SEO so far? • Neha,
Very informative! Just one question…do you have any suggestions as to a site that will suggest more keywords for a domain? Like if I have an example of what my passions are (to be blogging about) and then it could shoot out some ideas? I came across a headline analyzer last night but I hvnt tried it yet. So?
    I like your Twitter site.

  • I didn’t know the importance of preferred domain setup. I will set up immediately. Thanks for the guidance.
